Course Overview
This programme is designed for professionals who aspire to become Facilitators, delivering the Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism (one-day face to face course) to Health & Social Care professionals.
Training is led by qualified trainers, alongside a co-trainer with lived experience of autism and a co-trainer with a learning disability.
Only approved Lead Trainers are authorised to prepare Facilitating Trainers and co-trainers with lived experience to deliver Tier 2 training. Our Lead Trainers bring significant expertise in learning disability and autism, combined with extensive experience in delivering the Oliver McGowan Tier 2 training commissioned by NHS England.
Please note: Attendance at the Train the Facilitating Trainer course does not automatically result in certification. Participants must demonstrate both knowledge and confidence in learning disability and autism, actively contribute to discussions and group activities, and successfully complete quality assessments at the end of the training in order to be approved.
Aims and Objectives
The purpose of this course is to equip professionals with the skills and confidence required to deliver the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training to others.
By the end of the training, participants will:
Gain in-depth understanding of the content within Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism.
Strengthen their knowledge of learning disability and autism.
Recognise the importance of co-production, inclusion, and teamwork in training delivery.
Develop facilitation skills to confidently deliver Tier 2 training.

Day 1 – Understanding the Training

Pre-Requisites
Oliver’s Training focuses on awareness and understanding, rather than treatments or clinical interventions. It equips trainers with the skills to prepare staff to deliver Tier 2 training effectively—ensuring people with a learning disability and/or autism experience positive, equitable health and social care.
On completion, successful participants will:
Become an approved trainer and be registered on the NHSE approved trainers list.
Be issued with a unique trainer number to deliver Tier 2 training.
Continue working alongside approved co-trainers to deliver sessions.

The venue is centrally located in Grays town centre and is within walking distance of Grays Railway Station. Local bus routes also serve the area, and the venue is easily accessible from the A13 and M25 motorway network.

Additional Information
As these are full-day training sessions, attendees are encouraged to bring lunch with them. If participants require any reasonable adjustments, please notify us prior to the training date.
Please note that attendees must complete the Oliver McGowan e-learning module before attending the course and provide a copy of their e-learning certificate prior to the training date. Certificates for the Tier 2 training cannot be issued without evidence of completion.
